Taiwan-based maker of blank optical discs CMC Magnetics has seen a good return from investment on a theater chain in Taiwan, and is talking with real estate developers in China to set up theater chains in big cities including Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, according to company chairman Robert Wong.
CMC currently holds a 30% stake in Vie Show Cinemas (formerly Warner Village), the second largest shareholder next to Hong Kong-based cinema business group Golden Harvest, Wong indicated. Vie Show recorded pre-tax profit of NT$270 million (US$8.2 million) in 2009 and NT$360 million for January-August 2010, Wong said.
Vie Show currently operates 10 complexes housing a total of 85 theaters in main cities of Taiwan. The chain accounts for 40% of the total revenues for Taiwan's movie theaters.
