Taiwan-based blank optical disc maker Ritek will expand its monthly Blu-ray Disc (BD) capacity from one million discs currently to two million discs in the third quarter of 2009, while fellow competitor CMC Magnetics will add two BD production lines in the second half of 2009 to bring its total to three, according to the Chinese-language newspaper Economic Daily News (EDN).
Ritek's capacity expansion is to meet increased OEM orders for BD discs mainly from Fujifilm and Maxell, and will make Ritek the global number-two BD disc maker next only to Sony, EDN said. CMC is currently a BD disc OEM for Japan-based Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical, EDN noted.
