Source :Digitime update : 2010-07-23
While Japan-based Sharp and TDK will launch 100GB Blu-ray Disc (BD) XL discs in late July and September 2010 respectively, CMC Magnetics and Ritek, the two largest Taiwan-based makers of blank optical discs, will not step into production of BDXL discs for the time being, according to the companies.
The Blu-ray Disc Association in June 2010 announced the BDXL format - 3-layer BD-R (recordable, write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) with a storage capacity of 100GB or 4-layer BD-R or BD-RE with 128GB.
Ritek is developing BDXL with a subsidy from the Taiwan government and will start commercial production when demand picks up, the company said.
