Taiwan market: CHT to invest NT$200 billion in broadband infrastructure

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), in order for its ambitious goal of creating a digital rain forest around Taiwan to mark its 15th anniversary of privatization, plans to make a 10-year investment of NT$200 billion (US$6.93 billion) to construct broadband infrastructure, with NT$100 billion budgeted for 2011-2013 and the remaining evenly apportioned over 2014-2020, according to the company.
The construction of broadband infrastructure aims to hike Internet-access download speeds to 100Mbps-1Gbps for home users and 1-10Gpbs for business users in 2015 and further to 500Mbps-1Gbps for home users and 1-100Gbps for business users in 2020, CHT pointed out.
In addition to construction of broadband infrastructure, the digital rain forest includes energy saving and carbon minimization, creation of an environment to facilitate development of digital content and software as well as a platform to deliver cloud computing services.
